Derrick began his dance journey like many people, as a student interested in dancing for fun both socially and competitively. That interest grew into a career, and over a 12 year period from 2006 – 2018, Derrick was a full-time professional ballroom and Latin dance instructor. Not only did he coach students to be skilled social dancers, he also taught competitive dancers and participated with them at events across the country. Derrick and his students were regularly recognized as finalists and top competitors in their divisions and won numerous top teacher and top student awards as a result. In addition to his teaching career, Derrick and his wife Susie competed professionally together in different dance styles at many of the nation's largest competitions. Based upon their dedication to their craft and the coaching they received from some of the top teachers in the world, they went on to win several titles as a couple.
