On January 31, 2020, we welcomed four outstanding individuals to the LaSalle-Regis-Xavier Alumni Hall of Fame: Hannah Stolba X00 (grandmother, Laverne, accepted on Hannah’s behalf as Hannah is contracted with a rugby team in Valladolid, Spain through April); Joe Bedard X07; Corey Starry L93; and Jim Victor (posthumous award accepted by Jim’s brother, Tom, and sister-in-law, Mary). The Alumni Association hosted a reception for invited guests prior to the induction, which took place at halftime of the Xavier-Linn-Mar boys basketball game.
Joe Bedard (X07)
Joe Bedard is a 2007 graduate of Xavier High School. He is the son of Tony and Marcia Bedard and has a brother, Nic, and a sister, Abby, who are also Xavier alumni.
During his time at Xavier, Joe was a four-sport athlete, earning Mississippi Valley Conference All-Conference status in three sports along with first-team All-State honors as a linebacker and elite All-State punter. Joe was a catcher on the 2006 state championship baseball team and was the starting linebacker, fullback, punter and kicker on the undefeated 2006 state championship football team where Xavier competed at the Class 4A level in spite of their Class 3A enrollment. To date, the 2006 team is the smallest roster and Xavier is the smallest school to capture the Class 4A football state title. Following high school, Joe played football at Northwest Missouri State where he was on the 2009 Division II national championship team.
Joe now makes his home in Kansas City, Missouri, with his wife, Katie. He is a Special Education Teacher at Fort Osage High School where he coaches baseball and football. As a coach, Joe helped Fort Osage win the 2015 Class 5A state football title. Joe has the unique distinction of earning championship rings as a football player in high school and college as well as a coach.
Corey Starry (L93)
Corey Starry is a 1993 graduate of LaSalle High School. He was born and raised in Cedar Rapids by his parents, Terry and Mary Starry.
During his time at LaSalle, Corey captured the 1993 wrestling state championship at 140 lbs. Corey regards this as one of his greatest accomplishments. He often reflects back on the determination and work ethic it took to win this title and credits his success in life today to the lessons he learned as a young man competing in the sport of wrestling. Coaching wrestling remains one of Corey’s passions to this day.
Corey has been a union electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for the past 23 years. He is a general foreman for Paulson Electric working at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He has worked on numerous projects for businesses throughout the Corridor.
Corey is surrounded by a tight knit loving family that spends a lot of time together which include his wife Rachael, son Caleb, stepson Kyle and stepdaughter Kassy.
Hannah Stolba (X00)
Hannah Stolba is a 2000 graduate of Xavier High School and has amassed an impressive history as both an athlete and coach. In high school, she excelled earning first team All-State honors in basketball, while competing at a high level in soccer, track, and volleyball as well. During her senior season, Hannah helped lead the Saints to the Xavier girls basketball program’s first state tournament appearance, where she also earned All-Tournament Team honors.
To date, she holds more than 10 of the Xavier girls’ basketball records including: most points in a season (444), most points in a game (30), most rebounds in a season (206), most double-doubles in a season (9), and highest cumulative performance rating in a season (399).
After high school, Hannah went on continue her basketball career, and eventually discovered another passion: Rugby. Hannah has been named to the 2010 and 2014 USA World Cup teams in England and France respectively. During her time as a player, Hannah also pursued higher education and a career as a coach and referee. She earned an MA in Sports Coaching from the University of Northern Colorado in 2014 and has coached at Stanford and University of Colorado, Boulder. Most recently she served as head coach for the Women’s Division 1 Glendale Merlins in Denver, Colorado.
Hannah is currently contracted with a rugby team in Valladolid, Spain through April. She is looking forward to traveling back to Cedar Rapids in the summer of 2020 to see family and celebrate 20 years as a graduate of Xavier’s Class of 2000.
Jim Victor (R64)
Inducted Posthumously
Jim Victor was a 1964 Graduate of Regis High School. Growing up, he was an avid reader, desktop architect, model car maker, paperboy, hot rod enthusiast, music buff, fashion aficionado, high school student council president, college fraternity brother at Iowa State University, graduating with a desire to make a difference in the world.
He joined the financial markets as a professional broker, adviser, and researcher. He was often called on by television, newspapers and magazines to help people better understand the market and make the best decisions as they related to market finance.
Away from the office, he gave generously of his time and resources. Serving on countless boards for a variety of institutions throughout the Quad-Cities, Jim was uncommonly dedicated. But of all his efforts, Junior Achievement unquestionably was the brightest star in his tireless drive to bring the best principles of business, entrepreneurship and professionalism to life in young people.
Jim had a way of joining the private sector with the business world to achieve community service goals. As a person he was a great example of showing the importance of giving time, talent and treasure to the community.
His impact continues to be felt on future generations. Following Jim’s passing in July of 2018, the Regis High School Class of 1964 established the Jim Victor Memorial Scholarship at Xavier for qualifying prospective students.
